Friends
Forever
Alexandra
Tanner and her Navajo Indian classmate, Skylyn Eaglefeather, are
young teens who have been best friends from first grade to junior
high. Their life in Colorado is one of outdoor exploration with
a lot of family fun.
 |
Both
families, including Alex's beloved grandfather and Sky's grandmother,
share a strong bond of friendship and a love of nature. Knowledge
of the land builds through the girls' years of adventure with
Gramp - like hiking across the high meadows, visiting an abandoned
silver mine, or going off on horseback to a remote beaver
pond. Camping, canoeing, and learning to fly fish from the
river banks are part of the fun! |
| Neither
Alex nor Sky is afraid of hard work. They spend hours practicing
their saddle skills as they look forward to being first-time
contestants in the annual rodeo.Chores are part of their daily
ranch life. Sky helps care for her father's churro sheep,
mohair goats, and her own horse. A talented painter, she studies
art history, especially that of her own heritage and the culture
of the ancient Amerinds. |
  |
Horses
for the Handicapped absorbs their summertime energies. They pour
their hearts into caring for the animals. Their creative ideas
add originality to the weekly classes. At age 14, they are already
skilled horsewomen and both look forward to turning sixteen when
they can work directly with the students they have come to love
and respect.

Alex
and Sky further demonstrate their skills as class officers, organizing
a series of events to raise money for reforesting the land after
a devastating wildfire. Their courage and determination give promise
of the fine young women they are becoming.

Here
are some comments from readers of Friends Forever........
"The
books in Marilyn Martin's series about two Colorado families,
one of which is Native American, belong in the hands of every
young girl. Her tales are as fresh as the prairie wind, full of
adventure and fun.
Marilyn
has the gift of teaching without preaching as she explores the
values of multigenerational families, the environment, and Indian
lore. We see it all through the lives of Alexandra and Skylyn
- best friends forever. The two girls, their siblings, parents,
and grandparents, live in the modern world, sharing love and friendship,
making the reader feel that, indeed, things are pretty good after
all. I hope we hear more from this gifted storyteller." -Julia
Lee Dulfer, Book Doctor
"Two
wonderfully written segments about the working of rodeos, plus
how children handle grandparents as they enter into a nursing
home situation, make Marilyn Martin an outstanding storyteller." -Professor Emeritus, Stanley A. Aagaard, Ph.D, The
College of New Jersey at Trenton |
Cierra
